HONEY SHOW 2025

It was a very enjoyable afternoon at the 2025 Honey Show, held at Smailholm Hall, which provided ample space for exhibits and for participants to gather. Although there were slightly fewer people in attendance this year, nearly all classes were represented, and there was a strong turnout with many entries.

This year’s Honey Judge was Dr Gino Jabbar, an engaging expert from Edinburgh. His background as a scientist fuels a passion for lifelong learning, and he is a fully qualified honey-tasting expert, or “Honey Sommelier.” Alongside the usual honey classes, we organised a popular tasting experience where participants voted for their favourite honeys.

During the judging, Anne McClelland delivered an excellent talk, offering practical tips for preparing future show entries and insights into what judges look for. Her presentation was well-received, and we hope it inspires many more people to enter the 2026 Honey Show.

The results are available through this link: Borders Beekeepers Association Honey Show 2025 Results, with Kate Atchley winning the overall Winners Cup and Carol Ann Marsh receiving the Novice Shield. Photos kindly provided by Miranda Brackenbury will be available on the website soon.

The cake class, judged ably by Fiona Hawke (Secretary to the BBA), saw John Dow take the prize for his beautiful cake. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed tea, with many delicious slices of honey cake shared among attendees. Fiona also took on the role of Tea Lady, with the bee-themed teapot, sugar bowl, and milk jug admired by all.

We are very grateful to the organisers for all their work, from booking the hall to arranging classes and helping the judging run smoothly. Thanks also go to all the participants who entered. Gino proved to be an excellent judge, and his comments were appreciated for being both helpful and accessible.

Finally, we said a fond farewell and thank you to Fiona for her outstanding service as BBA Secretary over the past five years. She will be succeeded in 2026 by David McLuckie.
